Event Description:

Yom Hashoah Religious Service by Rabbi Naomi Steinberg, with guest speaker Dr. Eleanor Shapiro on Music in the Holocaust

Music was a potent source of solidarity and resistance--a way to escape the daily horror in the ghettos, the concentration camps and in the forests among the partisans. However, the Nazis also used inmate orchestras to control prisoners and as propaganda. After the war, music was a source of memorialization and legacy. In this multi-media presentation, Dr. Eleanor Shapiro demonstrates the power of music to resist, oppress and heal in the inhuman world of the Holocaust.
Dr. Shapiro is a Jewish music specialist who received her doctorate in 2018 from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. For eighteen years prior to that she served as the principal organizer of the Bay Area-based Jewish Music Festival.
