Membership

We warmly welcome new members! Please apply! In these difficult times, our application review process includes security measures, specifically a brief "get to know you" conversation and a reference check. Our multi-step application process protects the Congregation from anyone who might harm us and also gives us an opportunity to get acquainted with our new members. All members have access to our [private] membership roster, announcements and links that are not shared with the general public. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Our Members. Temple Beth El members come from all over Humboldt County. Our membership includes both long-time North Coast residents and newcomers. Some of us were raised in traditional Reform, Conservative, or Orthodox homes, while others began exploring Judaism as adults. Temple Beth El membership is open to individuals, families, and students attending Humboldt State University or College of the Redwoods. We are pleased to have approximately 140 households in our membership.

Why Should I Join? Joining Temple Beth El means becoming part of an inter-generational, extended Jewish family. We gather to support one another in times of both joy and sorrow. We work together on social and environmental justice causes locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. Temple membership includes reduced fees for classes and events, eligibility for Children’s Education Programs, use of the Temple Beth El Library, and access to the Members Area of this website.

Who will feel comfortable at Temple Beth El? Our members reflect the diversity of Humboldt County, coming from all walks of life and many different religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We welcome Jewish and interfaith families and individuals, including those who are new to Jewish study and practice. We are a Welcoming Synagogue, dedicated to inclusion of LGBTQ individuals and people with disabilities. Our programs are designed to meet the diverse spiritual, religious, educational, and social needs of our members.

What about membership dues? We ask that each member or member family pay dues. These dues are specific to each member and we provide a guidance worksheet to help.

Join us! We hope you will choose to become a part of the present and future of our congregation.

Temple Beth El relies on the annual financial commitment of its congregants to allow us to provide the services we offer to the Jewish community of Humboldt County.  The commitment level we request is 2% of each member unit’s Adjusted Gross Income from your most recent tax return.  If you have the ability to make a greater commitment, please consider doing so.
