Monday Night Torah with Phil Lazzar
Chukat - Balak
This week we (outside of Israel) have a double portion. In Chukat, the Torah tells of the death of Miriam, Moses's sister. It also tells of the time G-d told Moses to speak to the rock and water would come out, but Moses struck the rock, twice.
In Balak, there is a talking donkey. I remember Rabbi Naomi's son, Berel Alexander's bar mitzvah. Beral did a mini-play and played the part of the prophet, Bilaam, riding on a donkey, played by my daughter, Megan.
Bilaam was on his way to curse the Jewish people but instead, out came a blessing. We use this blessing in our services, it is the Mah Tovu, "how good are your tents, o' Jacob, your dwelling places, o' Yisrael."
What is the connection between these accounts and what do they come to teach us about what is going on in our society today as well as in our own lives?
