Please join me for Shabbat services. We will begin with prayers for healing and then light Shabbat candles. Please join us for our third annual "Silver Anniversary Celebration" in honor of Rabbi Naomi.

Sam Reider will perform music from his upcoming solo piano record. Reider's previous work with the Human Hands has focused on exploring different rhythms and forms of folk music from around the world. This new set of compositions pay tribute directly to some of Reider's pianistic influences from the worlds of jazz and classical music: from Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Keith Jarrett, to Györgi Ligeti, Chopin and Debussy.

Written over the course of the pandemic, many of the pieces have a water theme. "Mirror Lake" is a spacious meditation on the reflection of mountains in the High Sierras. "River Rain Thunder" is a blues-laced fantasy based on a theme by Ethiopian pianist and nun, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou. "Petrichor," named for the smell of the earth after a Spring rain, is a virtuosic exploration of a simple ostinato that blossoms into a bright world of color. Reider will discuss his compositional process and influences as he performs these pieces and many more.
