7 pm - Shiur (Study & Discussion) - Rabbi Bob Rottenberg - "Inclusivity on Yom Kippur: Who Are the Avayronim?” via Zoom.
The first thing we do when we gather as Yom Kippur is about to begin - even before we've lit candles, said a Sheheyanu, or listened to the beautifully haunting melody of the Kol Nidre prayer - is to give ourselves, and each other, the permission to pray with the Avaryonim. Who exactly are the Avaryonim, and why would we want to pray with them ? Why would we need permission to do so? And whose permission? Most texts translate Avaryonim as "those who have transgressed" - but who, exactly, are they?
And perhaps more to the point, who might they be today?
This is neither Biblical nor Talmudic - yet this tradition has persisted for more than 1,500 years. Come join this discussion as we prepare ourselves for that moment (a mere four days hence) when we, as a congregation, will once again give ourselves this permission!
