Racial Equity Roundtable: Talking With Kids About Identity, Race and Racism
Thursday, September 3, 2020 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM PDT - Online
Dear Community Member,
If you haven't yet, there is still time to register for next Thursday's Virtual Racial Equity Roundtable!
At the September 2020 Virtual Roundtable, we're excited to offer an opportunity to listen, learn from each other, and consider strategies about how families can talk about identity, race, and racism with kids. As families adapt to the return of school in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and international protests in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, many parents and guardians are considering how they can best share about the reality of these times with their families.
In this session, we will delve into the importance of taking an active stance against racism with children as well as highlight what is at risk if we assume a neutral or passive approach. A diverse panel of guests including children and parents will share about their experiences of talking about identity, race, and racism in their families.
In addition to hearing from community members on the panel, the September Roundtable will include participation via the chat feature in Zoom as well as live conversation in race-based affinity groups. Participants will be asked whether they identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) or non-BIPOC/White when they register). We look forward to seeing you there!
This month's Roundtable will be facilitated by Sharrone Blanck, President of the Eureka NAACP and Meridith Oram, works on racial equity on campus, in the community and in TK-12 schools with HSU's Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Recordings of Racial Equity Roundtables will not be made available. Just as when we met together in person, putting learning into practice via dialogue, relationship building and accountability are key to the Equity Alliance's approach to racial equity learning.
We want to ensure that everyone who is interested in attending is able to. No one is turned away for lack of funds, and we offer a sliding fee scale, including a scholarship option.
*Please note that we are unable to provide Spanish interpretation for this Roundtable as previously stated. We extend our apologies, and will be working to make this option available for future Roundtables.
If you have any questions about the event or how to register, please contact us at email@example.com.
Thank you for your time and we hope to see you.
