Hanukkah, the Festival of the Dedication, celebrates the restoration of the Temple after the Maccabean Revolt in 164 BCE, but what brought about the revolt in the first place? How was it won? Were Judas Maccabaeus and his family accepted as heroes, or was their leadership contested? Dr. Ashley London Bacchi, Visiting Assistant Professor of Jewish History and Ancient Mediterranean Religions at Starr King School for the Ministry, will introduce the second century BCE political and cultural context of the Maccabean Revolt. She will explore the differences between 1 and 2 Maccabees and the ideological agendas they represent. She will survey other sources which describe the events and how those perspectives relate to the accounts in 1 ans 2 Maccabees, and question what impact that has on the legacy of the Hasmonean dynasty.
