The Sound of Change: Performing "Jewishness" in Polish Small Towns.

Ellie Shapiro, PhD, will discuss Jewish music festivals in small towns in present-day Poland.

In Poland today, more than a hundred festivals of Jewish culture take place annually in small towns throughout the country. These communities had large, if not majority Jewish populations before World War II and the Holocaust. No Jews live in these towns today. But for the past twenty years, local civic-minded activists have increasingly initiated memorial projects, exhibitions, and cultural festivals to commemorate the Jewish part of their collective past. In this multimedia presentation, Ellie Shapiro presents this fascinating phenomenon which was the topic of her doctoral dissertation

Ellie Shapiro is an independent scholar focusing on Polish-Jewish relations. In 2018, she completed a dissertation on contemporary Jewish culture festivals in Polish small towns. Formerly the director of the Bay Area-based Jewish Music Festival, she first visited Poland in 2003 as a guest of the Polish Cultural Institute. From 1982-90, she was based in Israel where she worked as a teacher and freelance journalist.
